What’s Really Wrong with Youth Basketball?

• Too many players – 5 on 5 prevents maximum touches and skills

• 10-foot hoops for kids – it’s like adults trying to shoot at 20 feet!

• Zone defenses that get in the way of developing basic “man-to-man” play

• 3-point shots that lead to flawed shooting mechanics

• Full-court games that create too much out of control play; players move too fast for their ball control ability

• Full-court play under-utilizes gyms and fewer kids get to play and learn

• Coaches that are NOT trained to teach kids, and stress tactics over fundamentals

How SHOULD Kids Play?

3 on 3 so everyone gets lots of touches and learns to PASS

8-foot hoops or lower – so kids can shoot and not just heave

Man-to-man so fundamental skills get developed

2-point shots only so kids learn to play closer to the basket

Half-court games that maximize time for  fundamentals near the hoop – passing, defending, moving, shooting, rebounding

AND coaches trained how to teach KIDS what’s age appropriate!
